The Crucible in Sheffield, the venue for the World Snooker Championship
currently in progress, is to undergo a £13m refurbishment over the next three
years.
Work is set to start on the Crucible Theatre after the completion of this
year’s event although the refurbishment on the 36-year-old Sheffield venue will
not interfere with the future hosting of snooker’s flagship event.
‘The work is essential if we are to achieve our goal of turning The Crucible
into a building of European distinction,’ said Sheffield Theatres boss Angela
Galvin.
The exterior of the famous venue will be given a major facelift while the
snooker arena will get a new floor, new seating and new lighting.
The backstage area, including the players’ changing rooms, will also be
redeveloped.
