The ABB FIA Formula E Championship will roll out new sustainable branding and trackside signage for the remaining races of the electric car-racing series’ 2018/19 campaign after linking up with global branding supplier CSM Live.

The division of the CSM Sport & Entertainment marketing and branding agency was tasked with developing non-PVC material to reduce plastic production and waste at Formula E events.

Following 12 months of research, a durable and sustainable alternative will be applied to the barriers at each circuit, starting in Rome with the first European E-Prix of the 2018-19 campaign on April 13 – round seven of 13 races in total.

With the support of specialist manufacturer and supply chain partner HEXIS, the new adhesive film has been tailor-made for the series and has the potential to save 35 kilometres of PVC waste across the remaining races this season. The film is made of polypropylene, a recyclable material widely used across a number of industries.

Graham Clark, Managing Director at CSM Live, said: “In order to completely close the loop, we’ve looked at all elements of our supply chain and we’re thrilled to be able to deliver this new product – pioneering the way for non-PVC solutions to be used industry-wide across the globe.”

Even before the latest initiative, the Formula E Championship had secured ISO 20121 certification for its sustainable approach.

Julia Palle, Senior Sustainability Consultant at Formula E, said: “Working together with a trusted and credible supplier in CSM Live, we’ve been able to deliver sustainable solutions for branding and trackside signage. Not only does the non-PVC material provide similar levels of strength and durability, but each aspect has been carefully considered in order to fully limit its impact – from production line to re-use and recycling.”

The latest announcement from CSM Live and the Formula E Championship comes amidst a flurry of recent sustainable projects in the sports industry.

London Marathon Events – in conjunction with its partners, including Lucozade Sport – has unveiled a number of initiatives surrounding the 2019 edition of the mass-participation event on 28th April, including a series of recycling schemes and the largest ever trial of Ooho biodegradable and edible drinks capsules.

Meanwhile in Sochi, a new football facility has been developed with the support of Budweiser, using the beer producer’s recycled cups from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
