Speaking to #CuttingEdgeSport Senior Vice President of Tough Mudder International and Judge of the BT Sport Industry Awards, Sarah Harvey, predicts a continued rise in mass sport participation events next year…

  • What are you most excited about in the sport industry in the next twelve months?

The continued increase in mass sport participation. From Tough Mudder to Ride London, people are getting off the sofa and getting involved. This is happening even faster for women in sport, as the growth of Mudderella demonstrates.

  • Where could innovation take sport next?

The convergence of technology and sport is incredibly exciting. Crowdsourcing meets sport = experiences designed to meet the needs of mass participation athletes more closely or the fans that ultimately fund the sports.  Whether that’s Mudders’ helping design and test the next round of amazing obstacles, or the continued rise of fan groups owning sports clubs and influencing club development

  • What do you consider Cutting Edge Sport?

Tough Mudder! In three years, mass participation events have changed dramatically and we have driven this. Tough Mudder has redefined the notion of mass participation sport, taking away the need for competitive friction and replacing it with an environment in which you gain a sense of personal achievement through collective endeavour – overcoming obstacles and fears. It takes a combination of mental and physical strength, coupled with camaraderie – the best of team sport.  There is no winner at a Tough Mudder event, it’s about making sure your team all cross the line, do it with a smile and celebrate pint in hand once finished
