Championship side Derby County has appointed Wasserman’s Sam Rush as the club’s new president and chief executive officer.

Rush, who will assume the role in January 2013,  has worked in the sport industry for more than 15 years, most recently at global sports and entertainment agency Wasserman Media Group, where he has built the agency’s European football practice into a major arm of its business. Wasserman’s global football group has had a record year in 2012.

Wasserman will not look outside of the organisation to replace Rush, and a statement from the agency said that it is working with its current team to determine roles and responsibilities.

Rush said: ‘It has been a tough decision to leave Wasserman Media Group, and I thank Casey Wasserman and his team for their support over the past six years. The opportunity to work at Derby, at this exciting period in their history, was one though I could not turn down.’

Andy Appleby, Derby County chairman, added: ‘Sam’s experiences at the forefront of the sports business industry plus his global football connections mean he will come to us well prepared to tackle the next stage of the club’s development.’

Derby currently sit 20th in the Championship table, with five points from their opening five games.

Earlier this year, Rush took part in the Sport Industry TV ‘Headlines’ series ahead of the Sport Industry Awards 2012, check out his highlights here.
