UK-based advanced technology specialist Digital Catapult has announced a collaboration with Formula 1 that will explore the potential of 5G in the motorsport series.
F1 will work alongside Digital Catapult, as well as a number of other small and medium-sized businesses, to delve into 5G opportunities across a range of areas.
The collaboration will be underpinned by 5PRING, the UK’s first 5G commercial application accelerator, which is an open innovation platform that enables start-ups, enterprises, experts and technology providers to work together on 5G-focused projects for the events sector.
F1 is seeking solutions to enhance event experiences for motorsport followers, making viewing experiences more inclusive and interactive through the use of 5G and innovative technologies.
By working with Digital Catapult on the 5PRING programme, F1 will try out the latest emerging technologies through Digital Catapult’s 5G lab and demonstrators.
The parties will also work together to explore new fan engagement opportunities alongside start-ups and growing businesses.
The 5PRING Live Events programme, which starts this month, will give businesses access to cutting-edge technology and private 5G networks, as well as a tailored acceleration curriculum, coaching, mentoring and further expertise.
Guidance will be provided by experts from Virgin Media O2, Deloitte, Wayra, West Midlands 5G and Digital Catapult, all of which are consortium members and have representatives on the 5PRING board.
Areas that will be explored through the broader 5PRING initiative include 5G VISTA, focusing on delivering more interactive content to followers; 5G Festival, where the stars of the show and audiences can gather and connect both in person and online; and the 5G Testbed Accelerator, where 5G can be used to enhance products and services.
Digital Catapult has offices in London, Brighton, Sunderland and Belfast.
