Super League club the Catalans Dragons has begun work on a £7m renovation of its Gilbert Brutus Stadium.
The project is more than 12 months behind schedule after two years of wrangling with the local authorities, but the club says work will be completed in time for the start of Engage Super League XVI.
The improvements include a new covered stand with 2,500 seats, a new stadium entrance with ticket office, a bar and restaurant, club shop and administrative offices and a 400-square metre hospitality room.
Catalans general manager Christophe Levy said: ‘Once this stand is finished it will allow us to have other revenue streams to compete with local rugby union clubs and it will give us a comfortable boost to our 2012-2014 Super League licence application.’
The Dragons switched their last two home games to the neighbouring Stade Aime Giral but will stage Sunday’s Challenge Cup tie against Salford and the majority of their remaining home league matches at Gilbert Brutus with a reduced capacity.
