Boris Becker has been announced as the new head of men’s tennis for the German Tennis Federation (DTB)

The six-time Grand Slam winner will advise top players from the country and help its Davis Cup team. He will take up the role immediately, alongside former professional Barbara Rittner, who will be responsible for the governing body’s women’s tennis.

Becker previous coached former world number one Novak Djokovic, where he won 12 Grand Slam titles between 2013 and 2016. He also recently made headlines after being declared bankrupt in June for failing to pay back a longstanding debt to UK-based private bankers.

Becker said: “I would like to help the DTB through my experience as a former player as well as a coach and look forward to the exchange with the Davis Cup team, the coaches and our best men and junior players.”

Ulrich Klaus, president, DTB, said: “We are delighted that we will be able to rely on Boris Becker’s globally recognised expertise in the future, and that Barbara Rittner will be giving us a new, even more responsible role.”

Dirk Hordorff, vice president, DTB, added: “The filling of these two key positions with Boris Becker and Barbara Rittner is a milestone on our path to recovery, which we are still aiming at.”
