EA SPORTS and COPA90 have teamed up to launch a new internship programme for ‘Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME)’ young people in a bid to boost representation in the sports media industry.
The pair first worked together last year on a ‘Beat The Bias’ campaign to combat the issue of representation in the sport industry, and the two companies are collaborating again to offer an internship programme hosted by COPA90 and its partners.
The initiative will see the pair collaborate to fund a series of internships for five successful applicants and will provide an opportunity to work across COPA90 and its partner businesses from June to September 2021 – across a period where the world’s football media will be covering the rescheduled UEFA EURO 2020 and Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the summer transfer window and the start of a new season.
“Following on from our partnership with EA SPORTS last year on the Beat The Bias campaign, we are really excited to have launched this internship programme to inspire the next generation of young Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and other under-represented communities to join the sports media industry,” said Simon Joyce, Chief Business Officer, COPA90.
“We are committed to driving change and hope this programme acts as a catalyst and gateway for young people to see a pathway and career in a sector that needs much greater representation at all levels of industry.”
Launching the programme, the pair say racism is about ‘more than just high profile instances of abuse’, and also includes racial bias in commentary, a lack of diversity in sports media, and structural inequality across the game and in wider society.
