The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will begin a search for a new shirt sponsor following the announcement that Brit Insurance will not be extending its current deal when it expires in 2014.

The company has sponsored the England team since 2010, with its logo appearing on the shirts of the men’s and women’s national teams as well as the England Lions and England Disability sides.

It has been reported that Brit made the decision having sold many of its British operations this year.

Brit Group chief executive, Mark Cloutier, said: ‘As Brit’s business has re-shaped and developed into something very different to the business it was a few ago, it’s right that we step back and allow another sponsor to come forward and build on this brilliant partnership opportunity.’

Brit’s contract, which includes the 2013/14 Ashes series, is due to finish in April 2014 but the ECB has confirmed that date could be brought forward if a new sponsor is found and an agreement can be reached with Brit.

ECB Commercial director John Perera, who estimates that the Brit deal is worth around £18 million, added: ‘If the logistics work and someone came in early we could do something in time for the 2013-14 Ashes.’

The search for a new sponsor is expected to begin immediately.

International car manufacturer Kia replaced Brit Insurance as the lead sponsor of the Oval cricket ground in 2011.
