A £42m redevelopment of Edgbaston Stadium has been approved, with work set to begin in September and scheduled for completion ahead of the men’s Ashes Test against Australia in 2027.
The redevelopment will see the Priory and Raglan stands replaced with a new 3,191-seat facility and the introduction of a 146-bed hotel on-site.
Birmingham City Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the plans, which are partially funded by an £18m loan from the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Warwickshire County Cricket Club, which plays its home matches at Edgbaston, has projected that the hotel will attract 60,000 visitors annually, contributing an additional £5m to the £35m the stadium is estimated to generate for the local economy.
The new stand will also include enhanced accessibility features for disabled spectators.
Edgbaston regularly hosts major international cricket events, including matches in the 2023 Ashes series and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Craig Flindall, Edgbaston’s Strategy Director, said, “Cricket will always stay at the heart of our thinking. But it’s important we develop a stadium that operates all year round, supporting new jobs in this part of the city, and creates wider community opportunities.”
