The English Football League (EFL) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for ‘interested parties’ over the production of a new documentary series.
Prospective production and distribution partners are being invited to pitch their ‘creative approaches’ to the EFL, ahead of the deadline of 28th August at 5pm.
The proposed EFL docuseries would launch either in 2025 or 2026, and would allow production teams full access to member clubs, offering behind the scenes content and storytelling from the Championship, League One and League Two.
The new series would aim to provide the EFL’s 72 clubs with an opportunity to bolster their international presence.
Interested parties are being asked by the governing body to consider financial returns, content and output, distribution, exposure and marketing.
By launching its own docuseries, the EFL will try to replicate the recent successes of Welcome to Wrexham, the TV series that has followed the Welsh club’s rise from the National League to League One, following since the arrival of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as owners in 2020.
This series has allowed Wrexham to captivate US audiences. According to a recent Google Trends study, Wrexham is more popular than all MLS teams in the US, other than Inter Miami.
Sports documentary series have become increasingly prevalent since Formula 1’s Drive to Survive launched in 2019, as the EFL looks to generate further exposure for its clubs, players and communities.
“This is an unrivalled content opportunity with unparalleled access for production partners to the some of the most unpredictable, intense and exciting competitions in world football,” said Ben Wright, Chief Commercial Officer of the EFL.
“The EFL has a rich carousel of story-telling opportunities and between our clubs and competitions, the creative scope for a documentary series is extensive and is a wonderful opportunity showcase the clubs and competitions on a global scale.”
