The EFL has announced plans for a “thorough review” of its governance structures, following a board meeting that also confirmed the process for recruiting a new Chair and CEO of the organisation.
It follows news that Shaun Harvey is to step down from his role at the end of a season that has seen him in conflict with a number of the League’s clubs.
Harvey faced criticism over a TV rights deal that many EFL stakeholders believed undervalued the property.
The forthcoming review is designed to “ensure the appropriate constitutional and decision-making processes are in place for the long-term sustainability for all of the League, its 72 Clubs and its competitions,” according to the EFL statement.
The board meeting saw the first steps in developing a new strategic framework that will look specifically at how EFL members are represented, how decisions are made and how rules are created and upheld across the League.
Commenting on the outcomes of the meeting, EFL Interim Chair Debbie Jevans said: “We have today looked closely at what the League needs to focus on to address the well-documented challenges of the recent past and move forward so that the League can continue to thrive and prosper as a collective of 72 Clubs.
“A robust constitution that effectively, fairly and clearly governs the League, its Clubs and its decisions sits at the centre of this objective.
“There are many positives to draw from the successes we have achieved in recent years and by undertaking a review of our structures and processes, it will allow us to determine how we can best service our membership in all divisions.
“Effective communication is at the heart of that approach and this Board is committed to ensuring that its actions remain open and transparent.”
EFL also revealed that the recruitment process for a new CEO will now get underway, led by Jevans in consultation with member clubs. A nominations committee will include board representatives of all EFL divisions.
Jevans also confirmed that she will subsequently lead the search for a permanent EFL Chair and plans to return to her previous role as a Senior Independent Director of the League.
