The English Football League (EFL) is reviewing a £115m takeover bid for Championship football club Sheffield United from Henry Mauriss, The Athletic reports.
The American businessman who made his money in the finance industry previously failed to buy Premier League club Newcastle United for £350m in 2020. The slow pace of that deal meant that owner Mike Ashley eventually pulled out, moving on to sell to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Any deal would be subject to the EFL owners’ and directors’ test and Mauriss would need to prove his sources of funding and sustainability.
Sheffield United are currently owned by Saudi Arabia’s Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud. He bought 50% of the club in 2013 before assuming full control in 2019 after winning a legal case against Kevin McCabe, who owned the other 50%
The South Yorkshire club were relegated from the Premier League last season and are currently sixth in the Championship, vying for a play-off place and the chance to return to English football’s top-flight.
