England international Glen Johnson is the latest footballer to take delivery of a state-of-the-art Vauxhall Ampera extended range electric vehicle, following in the footsteps of the last regular England right-back Gary Neville, as well as Everton defender Phil Jagielka and national team manager, Roy Hodgson, as Vauxhall drivers.

The ‘signing’ follows an extension of the car manufacturer’s partnership with the England football team for a further four years back in May.

Vauxhall’s existing sponsorship as the official vehicle supplier of the FA, Wembley Stadium and St. George’s Park was previously due to expire at the end of next season.

Johnson, who has 49 international caps for England, will now be driving a top-of-the-range Ampera Electron in Black.

The Liverpool player said: ‘The concept of the car really appealed to me and makes it not only ideal for the journey to and from training every day, but also the odd longer journey to St Geroge’s Park and back down to London.’

‘We are delighted Glen has chosen a Vauxhall Ampera,’ said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s chairman and managing director. ‘It’s great news another established England international has got behind the wheel of our universally-acclaimed extended range electric vehicle.’

Arriving in showrooms last year, Ampera has a real-world battery range of between 25-50 miles, after which a small range-extending generator, powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine, intervenes to provide up to an additional 300-plus mile range.
