ESPN has expanded its UK sports programme by securing the rights to broadcast a nightly highlight show from the 139th Open Championship at Scotland’s St Andrews between 15th and 18th July.
The sports media company’s show, The Open Highlights, will air nightly at 11pm and will be the only highlights show of the tournament available in the UK in high-definition.
The deal marks ESPN’s first move into top golf programming in the UK.
ESPN and ESPNHD will also broadcast a one hour preview show, SportsCenter at The Open Championship Preview, on Wednesday 14 July at 11pm.
Meanwhile, ESPN Classic will broadcast a range of programming around The Open weekend and will broadcast official R&A films of recent Open Championships.
Next season, ESPN will further expand its line-up of exclusive sports, broadcasting 43 live and games from the Rugby Premiership and airing 25 FA Cup fixtures live throughout the 2010/11 season.
In May, ESPN UK broadcast live cricket for the first time: the Twenty20 cricket internationals between New Zealand and Sri Lanka and later this month ESPN UK will broadcast the inaugural Caribbean T20 Tournament live.
