US sports broadcast network ESPN has acquired Cricinfo, the leading global
cricket website, from The Wisden Group for an undisclosed fee.

The addition of Cricinfo to ESPN’s growing online portfolio is a clear signal
of the US broadcaster’s desire to expand its audience beyond its national
borders.

While ESPN has a thriving broadcast network in Asia through its 50:50 venture
ESPN Star Sports, the purchase of Cricinfo will give it a greater foothold in
the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

The acquisition of Cricinfo enhances ESPN’s online services, which includes
ESPN.com; ESPNdeportes.com – the Spanish-language sports website; and
ESPNsoccernet.com.

Wisden Group director Mark Getty, said: ‘Cricinfo has developed into a
significant cricket brand in its own right, combining huge global popularity
with strong commercial success.

‘ESPN is a major sports broadcaster and international rights holder and will
provide the perfect environment for Cricinfo to further realise its enormous
potential. The Wisden Group will continue to focus on its Hawk-Eye sports
technology business in cricket, tennis and a growing range of other sports.’
