England’s UEFA Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain generated a peak audience of 24.2 million across BBC and ITV, with an average of 22.3 million watching the full match.
On the BBC, the game averaged 17.9 million viewers, and delivered a peak audience of 19.3 million for the public service broadcaster.
BBC had a TV audience share of 63%, with viewership on BBC One peaking at 17.8 million.
The final was also streamed 7.6 million times across the BBC iPlayer video on demand service and the BBC Sport website.
“These huge figures demonstrate that the BBC is the place audiences turn to when it comes to the big moments,” said Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport.
“We offer something unique across multiple BBC Sport platforms and it’s a privilege to bring these incredible sporting moments to fans, even if the result doesn’t always go the way you want.
“All roads now lead to Paris for the second half of the BBC’s summer of sport.”
ITV meanwhile accounted for a 26% viewing share of TV audiences, marking a 7% increase on the commercial network’s share for the last edition of the Euro final in 2021.
An average of 3.9 million viewers tuned in to watch coverage of the final from 6:30pm, across the ITV1 TV channel and ITVX streaming service.
