Everton And Nottingham Forest Face Sanctions

Everton and Nottingham Forest have been hit by Premier League charges for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

The sanctions have been served after the two Premier League clubs sustained losses above the permitted threshold during the 2022/23 season.

The rule, which forms part of the league’s financial fair play restrictions, states that all Premier League clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of £105m over a three-season period.

This is the second charge Everton has received for breaking the specific rule in a matter of months. In November, the Toffees were deducted 10 points, but the club is currently appealing the decision.

Everton seems set to dispute this charge too with a club statement suggesting it believes double punishment is unfair.

The statement read, ‘The Premier League does not have guidelines which prevent a club being sanctioned for alleged breaches in financial periods which have already been subject to punishment, unlike other governing bodies, including the EFL.’

Nottingham Forest was promoted from the EFL Championship via the play-offs in 2022 and therefore was permitted a £61m its cap on losses.

Forest can expect to learn its fate in early April and will have the right to appeal.

In accordance with Premier League Rules, both cases have now been referred to the chair of the Judicial Panel, who will appoint separate Commissions to determine the appropriate sanction.

Both Everton and Nottingham Forest who sit 17th and 15th respectively in the Premier League have 14 days to submit their formal responses.

A statement from the Premier League, read, “The two clubs have each confirmed to the Premier League that they are in breach of the League’s profitability and sustainability rules”.

“Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs. The proceedings are heard in private with the Commissions’ final decisions made public on the Premier League’s website. The League will make no further comment until that time.”
