Premier League club Everton has submitted its controversial plans for a new £400m stadium in Kirkby to the local authority for approval.

The application for the 50,000-seat ground outside of Liverpool, a joint venture with supermarket giant Tesco, has been received by Knowsley Council.

The plans have been opposed by some Kirkby residents as well as some fans who believe Everton should remain in Liverpool, the home of its existing Goodison Park ground.

The stadium and superstore plan, which also features the construction of 50 retail outlets, is being pitched as an opportunity to regenerate the existing town centre which will see the development of leisure facilities such as hotels, bars and restaurants and investment in the existing Kirkby Market.

The application also details infrastructure and public improvements to Kirkby with around £10m earmarked for road improvements and further funding for boundary treatments designed to lessen the impact of the stadium on nearby neighbourhoods.

If the application is successful developers hope to begin work later in the year.
