Extreme H and its governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), have confirmed plans for the Extreme H World Cup in 2025, after signing a Head of Terms agreement.
The new competition will become the first ever hydrogen-powered off-road racing series.
In launching the new World Cup, the FIA is looking to showcase clean energy solutions, while inciting future investment into hydrogen infrastructure.
All teams competing in the series will field an equal number of male and female drivers, as part of a plan to support gender parity in motorsport.
Further information on the inaugural Extreme H World Cup is set to be revealed early next year.
Previously known as Extreme E since its inception in 2018, the international championship will switch from electric to hydrogen power for its next season, which gets underway in April.
“We look forward to the positive impact the FIA Extreme H World Cup will have across motorsport, the automotive industry, and beyond, accelerating the transition to clean energy and fostering an inclusive racing culture,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA.
“The FIA is at the forefront of advancing sustainable technologies. Motorsport must evolve and adapt to remain sustainable, and the adoption of hydrogen fuels is a key part of our future.”
Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of the FIA Extreme H World Cup, added, “It is a very proud moment for us all as Extreme H becomes the FIA Extreme H World Cup.
“This recognition from motorsport’s governing body is an important stamp of approval and a major step forward in showcasing hydrogen’s potential while aligning with the highest global standards in motorsport.”
