Eyeguide Looks For Quick Concussion Response

EyeGuide has developed a quick response solution for detecting concussion, using a rapid vision test that can assess possible concussions.

Concussion injuries in sports such as rugby have had a lot of coverage, with immediate diagnosis of the head trauma is complicated. Early detection could be crucial in preventing long-term damage and recently a mouthguard has been developed that changes colour to show if severe impact has occurred.

EyeGuide’s solution is largely to combat concussion in high school sports and it can detect neural impairment in ten seconds. As visual damage is a major indicator of brain injury, the test sees users follow a dot across a black screen as it moves in a figure of eight.

An iPad with the EyeGuide Focus app and a headset with a built-in camera records eye movements. At the start of the season, athletes have their average scores tested, which provides a baseline for comparison with the assestment factoring in thousands of results from other athletes to stop users giving intentionally low baselines.

If the athletes score differs significantly from their baseline after injury, they’re then diagnosed with concussion and coaches are advised to remove them from the field of play.

EyeGuide is also currently crowdfunding with the entire Focus system available with a pedge of $300.

While the upfront cost may seem expensive, EyeGuide believes that a single unit in schools will dramatically save time on testing and the medical bills of untreated concussions, as well as protect young athletes.
