F1 Boss Continues To Push Medal Scheme

After revealing a proposed new scheme earlier this year, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone remains steadfast in his mission to change the Grand Prix award process to medals from points.

The scheme, which would award gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three finishers – rather than the current system of points for the top eight – would make the sport more exciting, Ecclestone claimed.

His new idea was discussed at last week’s FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting, where it was agreed that more research was required.

If Ecclestone’s proposed scheme would have been installed this year, F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton would have lost to Ferrari’s Felipe Massa.

The F1 boss has denied that the new scheme was developed because of his disappointment that Lewis won the title, however, claiming that the accusation was ‘rubbish’. His concern, he claimed, was that Lewis only needed to come in fifth in the last race to win the championship.

Ecclestone reportedly said he envisions F1 becoming a sport where fans are watching their favourite driver race to win.
