Formula 1 has confirmed that there will be no 2020 races in Brazil, Canada or USA, but has added three more European races to its race calendar.

The series said it would ‘not be possible’ to race in the Americas this year due to the ‘fluid nature’ of the coronavirus pandemic, and after discussions with organisers in the respective countries, F1 has decided not to go ahead with races in those territories.

Meanwhile, three more European races have been added to the F1 calendar for 2020, including a return to Portugal for the first time since 1996 with an event at the Portimao track in the Algarve, as well as long-awaited returns to iconic venues at the Nurburgring in Germany, and Imola in Italy.

Chase Carey, Chairman and CEO of Formula 1 confirmed both the news that three new European races were added to the schedule and that races in the Americas would come back to the calendar in 2021.

“We are pleased that we continue to make strong progress in finalising our plans for the 2020 season and are excited to welcome Nurburgring, Portimao and Imola to the revised calendar,” he said.

“We want to thank the promoters, the teams, and the FIA for their full support in our efforts to bring our fans exciting racing this season during an unprecedented time.

“We also want to pay tribute to our incredible partners in the Americas and look forward to being back with them next season when they will once again be able to thrill millions of fans around the world.”

The news means that there are now 13 races on the F1 calendar for 2020 so far, however the series expects the revised schedule to have ‘between 15 to 18 races’ by the end of the campaign, hoping to end the season in the Gulf region in mid-December.
