The FIA have confirmed that they have come to an agreement with the teams to operate a new points system for the 2010 season.

The new system is aimed to encourage overtaking, with the top ten drivers now getting points and the winner now taking 25 points instead of 10.

Instead of allocating the points in a 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 format they will now be distributed 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

Tyre rules will also be modified so drivers will have to start the race on the same set of tyres with which their grid time was set in qualifying.

There is also another new ruling on tyres that reduces the number of dry weather sets per team from 14 to 11.

In another new development, the controversial double diffusers will be banned from 2011, meaning the main diffuser will be allowed, but its permitted height will be reduced from 175mm to 125mm.

The measures will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for final approval.
