F1 Points Scheme Faces Possible Change

A new proposal by F1 president Bernie Ecclestone would replace the sport’s current points system with a medal scheme.

The Olympic-style reward system would make the world champion whoever wins the most gold medals throughout the season.

The plan will be presented to the FIA in December, and Ecclestone is assured that the idea will be approved, reportedly claiming that ‘everybody is happy with the idea.’

Ecclestone’s scheme proposes that the first three drivers be awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal instead of the 10, eight and six points they are currently given. Those finishing outside the top three would not be awarded points towards the drivers’ championship but their positions would count in the overall rankings.

Under this system, Lewis Hamilton would not have won the world championship. Instead, he would have achieved second place while Felipe Massa, who won the Brazilian grand prix, would have taken the gold with six wins over Hamilton’s five.
