Motorsport governing body the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has agreed a deal with the F1 teams to change the scoring system for the second time in two months.
The FIA announced last month that the new system is set to increase the reward for race winners and encourage overtaking, with the top ten drivers now getting points and the winner now taking 25 points instead of 10.
Now the number of points distributed has also changed. Instead of allocating the points in a 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 format they will now be distributed 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.
Team leaders have said that the new adjustment had now been agreed at a meeting last week, subject to official approval.
However, McLaren team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said he’s not too sure about the new system: ‘I personally believe that changing the points won’t make a radical difference.
‘The original idea (was) that if you increase the incentive to overtake, then drivers will try harder. Certainly most of the young drivers that I see in Formula One are trying quite hard anyway.’
