The FA has submitted a bid for Wembley Stadium to host the UEFA Champions League final in 2023.
It would mark the third time the new Wembley has staged the final after it played host to Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United in 2011 and Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
The FA has not confirmed whether it has submitted a bid for the 2023 showpiece but London Mayor Sadiq Khan has backed the proposal. The original Wembley opened in 1923 and the FA is targeting the Champions League final as part of its centenary celebration plans.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “London is the sporting capital of the world and the Mayor wants to bring the biggest and the best events to the city. He is proud to support the FA’s bid for Wembley to host the final of the 2023 UEFA Champions League.”
Wembley is already due to host the semi-finals and final of UEFA Euro 2020, as well as the final of the Women’s European Championships the following year.
The deadline for bid submissions for the 2023 Champions League final was 1st July. UEFA is set to announce details of the bidders in due course before the winning bid is announced on 24th September at the body’s Executive Committee meeting.
The 2019 Champions League final was held at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, home of Atlético Madrid. Next year’s final is scheduled for Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium, with the 2021 match to be held in either Munich or St. Petersburg.
