The safeguarding campaign, which is endorsed by the NSPCC, has been supported by clubs and leagues across the game.
The 2025 theme, Small Talk is Bigger Than You Think, has focused on encouraging adults in football to give young people a voice by creating open conversations, asking questions and listening.
To support the campaign, England Football has produced a film featuring former Premier League player Anton Ferdinand and broadcaster Joe Thomlinson. The video has highlighted the importance of paying attention to small changes in behaviour and has been designed to raise awareness of safeguarding.
As part of the campaign, clubs and leagues have been encouraged to display Play Safe branding, use captain’s armbands and banners, and involve mascots in visibility activity. Coaches working with young players have been given new Play Safe Activity Cards, starting with Bib Voting, a non-verbal tool to help children share feedback and build confidence. Parents and carers have also been invited to complete The FA’s free safeguarding awareness training.
The Play Safe Weekend has aimed to make football safe, enjoyable and inclusive for all participants at every level of the game.
