The Football Association (FA) has named Sue Day as the governing body’s new Director of Women’s Football.

Day will take over from Baroness Sue Campbell at the end of the year, and joins from the Rugby Football Union (RFU), where she currently serves as Chief Operations Officer and Chief Financial Officer.

The 51-year-old has been given the brief of overseeing the FA’s women’s football strategy for the next four years, as it aims to provide equal opportunities for women and girls across all levels of the sport.

Day will also represent the FA while sitting on the board of NewCo, the newly formed organisation which will govern the top two tiers of women’s football – the WSL and the Women’s Championship – from the 2024/25 season.

In addition, Day will be tasked with developing and raiding awareness of disability football in England.

A former captain of England’s women’s national rugby union team, Day is a founding trustee of the Women’s Sport Trust, and received an MBE in 2020 for her services to gender equality in sport.

Outgoing Director of Women’s Football Campbell will step down from her role after an eight-year tenure.

Reflecting on her appointment, Day said, “It is an honour to be able to join The FA in this incredibly exciting role, at a pivotal moment in the history of the sport.  Women’s football has the opportunity to change the sporting and societal landscape forever, and I am very excited to be part of that.

“The challenge to develop disability football from the grassroots to the elite is also deeply motivating. I grew up playing football every day in the school playground, then one day I was told I wasn’t allowed to play with boys on the school team.

“I am passionate about making sure that future generations have the equal opportunities that weren’t afforded to so many girls like me. I’m really looking forward to working with the brilliant team at The FA and the many external stakeholders to bring all of these possibilities to life.”
