Social networking site Facebook has distanced itself from reports that it is in talks with the Football Association about becoming the new major sponsor of the England team.
The FA is looking to replace its £20m deal with Nationwide after the building society decided not to renew its deal due to the team’s poor showing at the World Cup.
Facebook was reported to be one of four companies looking to partner the FA but it released a statement saying: ‘Facebook is not in talks with the England football team regarding sponsorship. I don’t know where it has come from but it is not true. It’s bizarre.’
Nationwide’s current deal ends this month and it is rumoured that telecommunication giants O2 and Orange along with banking group Santander are looking to seal the contract.
