Facebook has developed its own sports platform, Sports Stadium, which will show live scores, stats, collate commentary and provide a place for fans to chat about their team.

The site will debut at the NFL’s conference championship games and then the Super Bowl in February. Following that, Facebook’s sports product will cover most major events.

Users can get real-time stats, photos and videos as well as team information and read commentary from the media. Under the scoreboard there are also four tabs; matchup, friends, experts and stats.

Under the matchup tab, users can get a summary of what is happening in the game, with a scoring summary and players.

The friends feed includes what users’ Facebook friends are saying about the game, whilst the experts tab features commentary from verified pages, including journalists, athletes and celebrities.

In a press release, the social networking site said: “With 650 million sports fans, Facebook is the world’s largest stadium. People already turn to Facebook to celebrate, commiserate, and talk trash with their friends and other fans.

“Now we’ve built a place devoted to sports so you can get the feeling you’re watching the game with your friends even when you aren’t together.

“With Facebook Sports, all the content on Facebook related to the game is in one place, and it comes in real time and appears chronologically.

“We’re rolling this out today for American football games and will support other sports around the world like basketball, soccer, and more soon. The experience is available now on iPhone in the US, and will expand to other platforms in the coming weeks.”
