Fans who applied for tickets to next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are beginning to discover whether or not they have been successful, as organisers of the competition start to contact the hundreds of thousands of applicants hoping for seats in 2014.

All ticket applicants will be contacted via letter or email over the next few days, with 2.3 million requests received for up to one million tickets during the four-week window.

People who have already applied for tickets will be given the first opportunity to buy any that remain unsold, while everyone who has applied for tickets will then be offered to buy more tickets during an exclusive period, before any remaining tickets are placed on general sale in late October.

From the 17 sports on offer, track cycling proved especially popular – receiving 25 times more requests than the number of tickets available.

There were also over 100,000 applications made for the 100m men’s final at Hampden Park, other sports which were oversubscribed included diving, swimming, mountain bike, artistic gymnastics, judo, shooting and triathlon.

Tickets for these events, along with popular sessions in other sports, were being allocated in a ‘fair draw process’, according to organisers.

Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive Ty Speer said: ‘Today marks yet another exciting moment in the journey to Glasgow 2014 and it’s a real pleasure to share the details of which great live sporting moments Games fans will be part of next summer.

‘The overwhelming enthusiasm demonstrated by hundreds of thousands of people already guarantees tremendous crowds across the board for Commonwealth athletes. This is a real vote of confidence and it’s clear that so many people intend to make sure this is going to be a great Games in Glasgow.’

Natalie Reed, from Suffolk, was one of the many lucky fans to secure all of her desired tickets. The rugby fan said: ‘I’m over the moon to get all the tickets I applied for. I’m hoping for the same atmosphere as the Olympics!’

Meanwhile, the brand new £125m SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) Hydro in Glasgow opened on Monday (pictured above by McAteer Photography).

Built on the site of the former Queen’s Dock, The SSE Hydro will host major music, entertainment and sporting events, and will be the largest entertainment venue in Scotland.

The arena has been designed to be flexible to accommodate a wide range of events, and will also be one of the major venues for the Commonwealth Games, along with the £108m National Indoor Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, both designed by Arup.

CEO of Glasgow 2014, David Grevemberg, will join a host of panelists at a “Best of British” Nolan Partners Sport Industry Breakfast Club on 6th November. To secure your place to the final event of 2013 for a one-off price of £95+VAT, click here.
