Football’s world governing body, FIFA, have authorised two companies, Hawkeye and GoalRef, to provide goal-line technology systems to leagues and competitions. The agreement brings the use of such technology in football a step closer with the systems now due to be used for the first time in December at the FIFA Club World Cup.

A FIFA spokesman said of the decision: ‘This milestone means that the companies now have authorisation to install their technology systems worldwide.’

The spokesman added that the systems will undergo a final check once they have been installed in a stadium. ‘Only a positive final installation test qualifies a system to be used in official matches.’

Goal-line technology was adopted into football’s rule-book in July this year by the game’s law-makers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The FA had initially hoped to have the technology ready to use midway through the current Premier League season however delays in agreeing the systems and problems surrounding the implementation of the technology in all 20 stadiums mean they are now aiming to start using it at the beginning of the 2013/14 season.
