FIFA and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have announced they will collaborate in order to tackle coronavirus.
The collaboration would build on a four-year agreement between the two global organisations, signed in 2019, to promote healthy lifestyles through football over the next four years.
Gianni Infantino, President, FIFA met with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General, WHO, at the WHO’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
The pair discussed how football can help the WHO respond to the coronavirus pandemic and what measures should sports governing bodies and administrators take in specific situations.
In a joint statement, they said: “Sports governing bodies and decision makers should always keep in mind that health comes first.
“All sports bodies must be ready to follow national guidance, based on thorough risk assessments, to stage safe events or take other required actions that protect the health of fans, players, coaches and the broader communities.”
Working in conjunction with other leading figures in world football, FIFA and the WHO will launch a joint campaign which seeks to raise awareness and engage in ‘various initiatives’ to ensure all people receive the advice they need to protect and promote their health and that of their communities.
