FIFA has banned executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii from voting in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting ballot.
??Both FIFA members were subject to an inquiry from the world’s football governing body after a British newspaper claimed the two had asked for payments in exchange for votes.??
Adamu, who has pleaded innocence throughout the investigation, was banned from football activity for three years and fined 10,000 Swiss francs.??
Temarii, Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) president, received a one year ban and was fined 5,000 Swiss francs for breaching rules on loyalty and confidentiality.
Four other FIFA officials were also suspended – Ismael Bhamjee of Botswana was handed a four-year ban, Amadou Diakite of Mali and Ahongalu Fusimalohi of Tonga both received three-year bans and Tunisia’s Slim Aloulou got a two-year suspension as FIFA signalled its intent on stamping any corruption out of the game.??
The decision means only 22 executive committee members, instead of the expected 24, will vote on 2nd December when FIFA chooses the hosts for the two tournaments.??
FIFA ethics committee chairman Claudio Sulser said after a three-day hearing: ‘For as long as I am in the ethics committee, we will have a zero tolerance policy for all violations of standards.’??’We don’t want cheaters, we don’t want doping, we don’t want abuses to be accepted.’
The 2018 Spain-Portugal and 2022 Qatar bids were also cleared of all collusion.??’We didn’t find sufficient grounds to reach the conclusion that there was any collusion, therefore we didn’t move forward on that case,’ said Sulser of the two bids.
