FIFA’s general secretary Jerome Valcke has accused the English and German media of portraying South Africa in a negative light ahead of the World Cup this summer.
Valcke said, ‘It’s sad that every morning you wake up and every morning there are articles from the world’s football family saying that people should not fly to South Africa, that this is a dangerous country… that FIFA and Sepp Blatter made the wrong decision to host the World Cup in South Africa.’
Valcke then went on to say that the criticism comes ‘mainly from Germany and England’, adding that their voices are heard loudest because they ‘are very big voices in the football family.’
The world football governing body have just released figures to show that 2m tickets have been sold for the tournament this summer, meaning a third of the tickets are still available.
