FIFA President Gianni Infantino has made a $10m donation to the WHO as it deals with the coronavirus pandemic.

Infantino says the governing body for world football’s solid financial state means it is in a position to offer what he has called ‘proactive solidarity measures’ to help fight the disease and its effects – including those on football.

On top of the donation to the WHO, Infantino has proposed a global assistance fund to help ‘members of the football community’

“The world is facing an unprecedented health challenge and clearly a global and collective response is needed. Cooperation, mutual respect and understanding must be the guiding principles for all decision makers to have in mind at this crucial moment in time.” said Infantino in a statement.

“Particularly in football, finding appropriate and fair solutions at global level is imperative. This requires unity, solidarity and a shared sense of responsibility and we need to think of all those around the world potentially impacted by our decisions.

“With this in mind, FIFA has constantly been discussing with confederations, member associations and other stakeholders from around the world, also bearing in mind that firstly health and secondly sporting solidarity are paramount considerations for the world of football.”

Infantino says FIFA will also discuss moving the FIFA Club World Cup with the Chinese government. The tournament is scheduled to take place in the country in June and July 2021, but after requests from UEFA and CONMEBOL to postpone EURO 2020 and the Copa America respectively, the world governing body will seek to move its own tournament to accommodate.
