FIFA has confirmed that it has filed claims against former President Sepp Blatter and former Vice-President Michel Platini.

The global governing body is seeking a CHF 2 million (£1.52 million) restitution from both parties, matching the figure ‘unduly’ paid to former UEFA President Platini in 2011.

At the time, Platini claimed it was money paid to him by Blatter for back dated work conducted between 1998 and 2002 – but FIFA’s Governance Committee has now ruled the payment had no basis in contract and was in breach of its code of ethics.

The statute of limitations to seek compensation had been set to expire on 31st December 2019.

FIFA has also confirmed that the money, if and when recovered, will be fully reinvesting into football development ‘where the money should have gone in the first place.’
