Despite protests from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Football Associations, FIFA has announced its intention to support plans to create a GB football team to compete in London 2012 Olympics.
While the agreement will not officially be made until FIFA’s meeting in Tokyo, the governing body’s president Sepp Blatter has already expressed his intention to have a football team to represent the Olympic host.
Scotland launched an opposition campaign earlier this week, claiming that the formation of a GB team would threaten their ability to compete in future international tournaments as separate teams.
Wales and Northern Ireland, too, have openly expressed their opposition, though FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke has attempted to soothe all three associations’ concerns.
If FIFA agrees to create a GB football team for the 2012 Games, it will be the first to compete in the Olympics in 52 years.
