The FIFA Council has unanimously approved plans for the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup, which will take place between January and February 2026.
During a meeting ahead of the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, the council gave the green light for the tournament, which will initially comprise 16 teams, and will be staged on a quadrennial basis.
FIFA says further details regarding the first edition of the Women’s Club World Cup will be revealed in due course.
Football’s global governing body also confirmed it had received two bids for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027. These include one bid from Brazil, as well as a joint proposition from the football associations (FAs) of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Proposals for a Women’s Club World Cup were first approved by the FIFA Council in December 2022, as part of a strategy to further drive the global growth of the women’s game.
Meanwhile, FIFA has released its Women’s International Calendar for the 2026-2029 period, with the schedule intended to support the well-being of female players and coaches.
Also during the FIFA Council meeting, the organisation approved amendments to its Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. following discussions with stakeholders within women’s football.
These amendments will take effect from 1st June, and will place greater emphasis on player welfare, going forward.
