The first batch of tickets for next summer’s Ashes cricket contest between England and Australia have sold out within hours of going on sale.

The first 6,000 tickets put on public sale by Glamorgan CCC for the first Ashes Test at the Swalec Stadium next July were sold in a matter of hours.

The county cricket club’s phone lines and website were inundated with applicants from all over the world.

The county are due to put another 6,000 tickets up for sale to the public in January for the England-Australia clash being played between 8th-12th July.

The match will be the first Ashes Test match ever staged in Cardiff and will open the 2009 series.

The Swalec Stadium outfield is also in the process of having a new £600,000 drainage system installed which is due to be completed in January.

The work is being done because of problems with the drainage of the outfield, which came to a head when the England v South Africa one-day international this summer was abandoned.
