The Football League has launched a campaign to boost attendances of midweek football fixtures, encouraging more people around the country to experience the thrills of football under floodlights at their local club.
The campaign aims to support the 72 Football League clubs as they head towards the season finale, with 130 midweek games set to take place between now and the Sky Bet Play-Off Finals in May.
The initiative, supported by Chris Kamara, is specifically targeting younger audiences between the ages of 18 and 34 who don’t currently consider Football League fixtures when planning their midweek evenings. With fewer responsibilities and an appetite for new experiences, this age group are perfectly placed to break the boredom of midweek routines by heading down to their local Football League club between now and the end of the season.
Describing the campaign, Kamara said: “I’ve played in some incredible football matches over the years but nothing quite matches the atmosphere of a midweek fixture. There’s a spark in the air when the floodlights are on which seems to really lift the crowd. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or have never been to a game before, it’s an occasion that all football fans should experience.”
To make it easier than ever before for people around the country to enjoy the remaining games, The Football League has created a website dedicated to midweek football, including match information on all 130 fixtures and direct purchase options for tickets.
Commenting on the new campaign, Drew Barrand, marketing director of the Football League, stated: “Football fans yet to experience midweek matches may not be aware of just how brilliant these occasions can be. It’s not just what is happening on the pitch that makes the experience so special, but the sights and sounds that create an atmosphere that is truly unique and so different to weekend football.
“We’re encouraging fans to trade boredom and routine for something new and exciting and urge them to get down to midweek ties at their local Football League grounds before the season ends.”
Clubs around the country are also getting behind the initiative to boost attendances in their grounds during the week, where increased numbers will further enhance the special atmosphere that exists at midweek games.
