The Football League is still searching for a new title sponsor after it was confirmed that energy supplier npower would not be renewing its contract when it expires at the end of the season.
The period of exclusivity in negotiations expired in October, when npower first suggested it could end its partnership, leaving the Football League free to talk to other brands – however, the ideal suitor is yet to be found, according to media reports.
npower signed a three-year deal, believed to be worth around £21 million, to replace Coca-Cola in 2009/10 but confirmed to Press Association Sport on Tuesday that it will be bringing the partnership to an end.
A statement read: ‘We can confirm that we will not renew our sponsorship of The Football League when the current season ends at the end of May.’
‘During the last three years, we have enjoyed a hugely successful relationship with The Football League and have engaged the passion of thousands of football fans across the country.’
With less than three months until the end of the current season, no announcement is due on who will replace npower as the league’s principal sponsor.
The statement continued: ‘The contract comes to an end at a time when npower is in the process of reviewing and defining brand positioning and marketing strategy to help shape future direction, following a restructure which saw the generation arm merge into a wider pan-European company.’
