UK football fans can continue to watch major events on free-to-air TV after a ruling by the European Court of Justice.

The UK government has a list of ‘protected’ events of national sporting importance that must remain on free-to-air channels.

FIFA and UEFA challenged the decision that the World Cup and European Championships could be protected on this list, arguing that the current set-up interfered with their ability to sell television rights at the best price.

The EU has now said that the present way in which the major football championships are broadcast, may continue.
