Ford has launched a new virtual reality (VR) storytelling app that lets users get an up-close experience with the brand.
The first story launched on the app is a behind-the-scenes look at 24 Hours of Le Mans, which Joey Hand won this year in his Ford-sponsored GT. Hand narrates the experience, which also shows the pit crew’s work during the face and a view from the Ferries wheel at the track.
For the app, Ford partnered with Tool of North America, who specialize in storytelling platforms such as films, virtual worlds amongst others.
Erich Joiner, founder of Tool of North America said: “A lot of automotive manufacturers are just sticking a VR camera in a car. We wanted this to have more of a story arc to it, and pushed it to an experience where people felt like they went to this race in France.”

The footage from the event includes an eight-minute narrate clip from inside the GT and fans will also get a 360 degree look of what the drivers see whilst racing.
The app is called ‘FordVR’ and is available on iTunes and Google Play, with the next VR story, launching in September, featuring more race content and future stories will show scenes from the studios and labs working on Ford’s latest technology.
Ford Digital marketing manager, Lisa Schoder said: “We are very excited about this opportunity to provide truly immersive experiences that showcase the best of Ford Motor Company. Our VR platform allows us to tell dramatic, impactful stories, to show a surprising side of Ford.”
“On top of sharing virtual reality stories about our innovative products, we are also looking to bring mobility issues to the forefront. As we expand our business to be both an auto and a mobility company, we are pursuing emerging opportunities through Ford Smart Mobility.”
