The former chairman of Northampton Town FC, David Cardoza, has been charged with fraud relating to the multimillion-pound loan to the League One football club.

Charged alongside four others, including his father, the news follows a long-running investigation into £10m of public money loaned to the club for a new stand that was never completed.

The East Stand remained half built for 10 years and is only now being completed.

Officially, Cardoza has been ‘accused of conspiring to commit fraud by false representation, fraud by abuse of position and transferring criminal property.’

As well as Cardoza and his father, Anthony, Cardoza’s son Marcus, property developer Howard Grossman and another man, Simon Patnick have also been charged.

The five are due to appear at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 16th January, with each man is accused of making false representations that the loan money would be used for the sole purpose of developing Northampton Town FC’s Sixfields Stadium and an adjoining hotel.

David and Anthony Cardoza have also been charged with fraud by abuse of position, which relates to a sum of £8.75m being paid from the football club to 1st Land Limited, a company owned by Howard Grossman.
