Julie Foudy, two-time Women’s World Cup winner and former president of the Women’s Sport Foundation, has become the latest high-profile global name to become an Ambassador to Beyond Sport.
As an Ambassador for Beyond Sport, Julie will help to spread the word about the global initiative and its mission to promote, develop, and fund the use of sport to create positive social change across the world.
She will also offer her input during the final judging process for the Beyond Sport Awards which provides support worth $1m annually to projects across the world that use sport to address issues within their communities.
Speaking about her new role, Julie stated: ‘I’m delighted to be able to give my time and support to Beyond Sport as it seeks to have a substantial impact in developing the use of sport as a vehicle for positive social change.’
‘I’ve witnessed first-hand how effective sport can be in transforming communities and dealing with social issues head on and, as a Beyond Sport Ambassador, I plan to devote all my energies towards spreading the value of that message worldwide.’
Julie had a sensational soccer career while playing on and captaining the USA National Team for 17 years, participating in four Women’s World Cups and three Olympics Games.
She also has a strong background in sport and development through her presidency of the Women’s Sports Foundation from 2000-2002, and having served on its Board of Directors for seven years with a particular focus on Title IX, childhood obesity, and athletes’ rights issues.
Additionally she set up the Julie Foudy Leadership Foundation – a non-profit, public charity whose mission is to build on a foundation of sports and fitness to empower young women from all socioeconomic backgrounds to become leaders who positively impact their communities.
Julie is currently an analyst for ABC/ESPN and the NBC Olympics.
She joins 21 other Ambassadors, all who bring unique experiences and visions to the Beyond Sport initiative, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair; the multi-Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson; Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of London 2012; HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan; and IOC Executive Board Member Nawal El Moutawakel, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Morocco.
