Football, the relationship between clubs and fans and the game’s financial model will be under the microscope at the next Sport Industry Breakfast Club powered by CWM Cyclone Promotions, with Aston Villa CEO Tom Fox and former player and manager turned pundit Gianluca Vialli taking to the stage on Wednesday 10th June.
Before moving to Aston Villa in 2014, Fox spent five years as chief commercial officer of Arsenal FC building a world class commercial team. This group successfully expanded the club’s global media footprint and negotiated partnership deals totalling almost £400m over a four year period, doubling annual commercial revenues from £52m in 2009 to their current level of £110m.
With his first season as CEO of Aston Villa drawing to a close, he is well aware of the commercial pressures facing clubs and how teams must operate in the modern day world of booming television deals and financial fair play.
Meanwhile, after a career laden with silverware including the FA Cup, Serie A and UEFA Champions League, Vialli is now involved with a new initiative, Tifosy, which helps football clubs raise funds for development by working with the fans.
Vialli, who played for Sampdoria, Juventus and Chelsea, as well as 59 appearances for Italy in a playing career spanning two decades, commented: “Clubs and fans working together for a common goal can make a real difference to the game we all love. This is a football revolution and I am proud to support it.”
The pair will address key topics facing football in the UK and abroad such as the increase of foreign ownership in the Premier League, the impact of broadcast and sponsorship deals, financial fair play and the need for a sustainable commercial model, differences in the elite European leagues and their respective fans’ attitudes including the increasing trend of supporter ownership and other issues affecting modern football.
