The French Open has postponed its tournament from May and June until late September and October due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Tournament organisers, the French Tennis Federation (FFT), say the competition will now run from 20th September to 4th October 2020, which would put start of the clay court Grand Slam just one week after the scheduled completion of the US Open. The date would also clash with the Laver Cup as well as the Asian Swing period of both ATP and WTA Tours.
Bernard Giudicelli, President, FFT, said the decision was taken in the interests of health and safety, saying: “We have made a difficult yet brave decision in this unprecedented situation, which has evolved greatly since last weekend.
“We are acting responsibly, and must work together in the fight to ensure everybody’s health and safety.”
Meanwhile, the AELTC has confirmed that it is still planning to go ahead with Wimbledon, and is also continuing with its scheduled grass court season for the time being.
However, in light of government recommendations against unnecessary social gatherings, it has closed the Wimbledon Museum and Tours, Shop, and Community Sports Ground. It has also confirmed that the All England Club and Wimbledon Park Golf Club outdoor facilities will remain open to its members, but this will only be on a partial basis.
Richard Lewis CBE, Chief Executive, AELTC, said: “At the heart of our decision-making is our commitment to the health and safety of our members, staff, and the public, and we are grateful to the government and public health authorities for their advice and support.
“While we continue to plan for The Championships at this time, it remains a continuously evolving situation and we will act responsibly, in the best interests of wider society. We thank all of our members, staff, players, partners, contractors and the public for their patience and trust as we continue to navigate this unprecedented global challenge.”
