David Gill, chief executive officer of Manchester United, told the FT Sport
Industry Summit that it would be ‘unlikely’ that the Old Trafford club would
play a Premier League game in the US.
With a number of US sports leagues staging competitive games in the UK, it
has raised media speculation that the Premier League would make a similar move
by staging a match across the pond in order to grow its international audience.
Gill poured scorn on such a move saying that it would be an unlikely
scenario.
He said: ‘It’s highly unlikely and certainly not going to happen in the
short-term. Given the hectic schedule of the Premier League it would
logistically very difficult and personally I just can’t see it happening.
‘You can never say never and in the end it’s a decision for the Premier
League as a collective body as opposed to one club but I can’t envisage how it
would work.’
